Reading & Manuscript Consultations

reading

  • The Gilliam Writers Group charges a fee for reading. This doesn’t mean we charge clients for necessary prep time or basic due diligence before a meeting! It does mean, however, that the we have to pay our coaches when they’re asked to read a 20-page chapter, or an entire novel manuscript, outside of session.

That’s because when writing coaches read our clients’ manuscripts, we’re actually providing a valuable planning, advisory, and note-taking service. The type of “reading” we do on the job is better thought of as light editorial work; it often includes document mark-ups, written notes for future meetings, etc.

Every form of “reading” we offer includes a short editorial letter outlining our feedback on your work.

While full-scale editing is charged hourly due to the intensive nature of that service, “reading” (either with or without a mark-up of your document) is charged by the word, making it much less expensive.

Please note that our writing coaches will never “surprise” you with fees for unauthorized reading time; all charges will receive your approval ahead of time, before any services are rendered.

  • We will mark up your document with light editorial notes as we read, and also provide an editorial letter outlining our feedback.

In other words, we will read and respond to your entire document and provide useful line notes on style, mechanics, and organizational flow.

Reading “with mark-up” is charged at the rate of 3¢ per word.

  • We will read your entire document before and provide an editorial letter outlining our feedback.

Reading without mark-up is charged at the rate of 2¢ per word.

  • If you purchase our manuscript consultation service for a poetry manuscript, we can either provide feedback “with mark-up” at the rate of $15 per page, or “without mark-up” at the rate of $7.50 per page.

With mark-up ($15 / page), we will mark up your document with light editorial notes as we read, and also provide a brief editorial letter outlining our feedback.

Without mark-up ($7.50 / page), we will read your entire manuscript and provide an editorial letter outlining our feedback.

manuscript consultations

  • Manuscript consultations are a 2-part service. The first part of this service is reading: before meeting for your live video consultation, your writing coach will need to thoroughly study your document. You have the option to purchase reading with or without a “mark-up,” meaning light editorial notes and comments.

  • If you purchase a manuscript consultation “with mark-up,” we will mark up your document with light editorial notes as we read, and also provide an editorial letter outlining our feedback.

In other words, we will read and respond to your entire document and provide useful line notes on style, mechanics, and organizational flow. (Reading takes place before your final 1- or 2-hour consultation.)

Reading “with mark-up” is charged at the rate of 3¢ per word.

*For more information, please see our manuscript consultation page.

  • If you purchase a manuscript consultation “without mark-up,” we will read your entire document before your live 1- or 2-hour consultation and provide an editorial letter outlining our feedback.

This will prepare us to discuss your work in-depth during your live consultation. (Reading and letter-writing takes place before your final consultation.)

Reading without mark-up is charged at the rate of 2¢ per word.

*For more information, please see our manuscript consultation page.

  • If you purchase our manuscript consultation service for a poetry manuscript, we can either provide feedback “with mark-up” at the rate of $15 per page, or “without mark-up” at the rate of $7.50 per page.

With mark-up ($15 / page), we will mark up your document with light editorial notes as we read, and also provide an editorial letter outlining our feedback.

Without mark-up ($7.50 / page), we will read your entire manuscript before your live 1- or 2- hour consultation and provide an editorial letter outlining our feedback.

*For more information, please see our manuscript consultation page.

  • As stated above, manuscript consultations are a 2-part service. The second part of this service is the live consultation: after your writing coach has read your document (and marked it up if desired) and delivered their editorial letter, they will meet with you on video to discuss their feedback in depth. They will answer any questions you might have during this call, and can also show you how to implement their suggested revisions (using a shared digital document).

  • Our manuscript consultation service includes reading (with or without mark-up) followed by a live 1- or 2-hour consultation over Zoom and a shared Google Doc.

We will read your entire manuscript (either with or without mark-up) and provide an editorial letter before your consultation.

During the meeting, we will walk you through the successes and pain points we’ve identified in your work.

We’ll also provide actionable steps you can take to address any areas for improvement, answering whatever questions you may have along the way.

This consultation will be charged at your writing coach’s standard rate, which depends on their position in our company (Faculty Director or Company Partner).

    Directors charge $140/hr.

    Partners charge $200/hr.

*For more information, please see our manuscript consultations page.
